Quick answer: self-drive can be possible, but the route and rules decide
TANAPA’s current general planning guidance says self-driving is possible in many parks with a suitable vehicle. It does not say every Serengeti route or season is suitable, so recheck current road conditions, gate times, park rules and rental restrictions.
For game drives, TANAPA highly recommends licensed drivers or guides for safety and wildlife knowledge. That recommendation is not the same as a universal legal requirement for every Serengeti vehicle trip; some activities can have separate guide or permit rules.
The TANAPA Serengeti park guide publishes a 50 km/h speed limit, no driving from 19:00 to 06:00, and a requirement to stay on roads or tracks unless off-road driving is specifically allowed. Near animals, remain in the vehicle and do not stand on or hang outside it.
At Mara River crossings, use designated points and marked distances, remain stationary for the crossing, respect vehicle limits and stay in the vehicle except in an emergency.
Define the route and access point
Serengeti is a large destination, so a destination label alone is not enough for a useful comparison.
